This depends heavily on the plant species. Fast-growing evergreen hedges like Privet or Leylandii usually require trimming two to three times between May and September to keep them looking sharp. Slower-growing, formal boundaries like Beech, Hornbeam, or Yew typically only need a single annual cut, ideally in late summer/early autumn (September or October) once the nesting bird season has concluded.

For heavy clay soils, which are incredibly common around Somerset, autumn (September to October) is the absolute best window for deep lawn renovation, scarification, and hollow-tine aeration. The warm soil and autumn rain allow overseeded grass to establish rapidly before winter. Light spring de-thatching can also be carried out in April if moss levels are high.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to disturb nesting birds. While there is no legal ban on summer trimming, we strongly recommend avoiding major cutbacks between March 1st and August 31st. For light, formal maintenance during this window, we always perform a meticulous, physical inspection of the hedge to ensure no active nests are present before starting our equipment.

To maintain a healthy, thick, striped turf, lawns should be mown once a week during the peak growing season (April to October). During warm, wet periods, a fortnightly schedule is often not frequent enough, as cutting more than one-third of the grass blade height at once stresses the plant and encourages weed invasion.
